Importance of Living in Alignment with Our Values
Today we want to talk to you about a fundamental aspect of our holistic health: the importance of being aware of the values that govern our lives and our daily decisions.
Reflecting on our values and bringing clarity about which ones are most important helps us live with greater coherence and experience greater calm and well-being in all dimensions of our lives.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a Coachingxvalores workshop at the University of Alicante. Lily Méndez Arias, an international expert in value development, led a two-hour session on the importance of recognizing personal values and their influence on our lives, how they are built, and the importance of fostering coherence between beliefs, values, and behaviors.
Why Are Values Important?
Values are the fundamental pillars of our lives. They govern our attention, time, and resources. When we bring coherence and align with our values, we notice a sense of satisfaction, calm, and peace. However, when we do not live according to our values and let ourselves be carried away by external circumstances, we feel discomfort, incoherence, and distress.
Values as a Compass
Think of your life as a boat navigating a vast ocean. Without a compass, you can easily drift off course, carried by the currents and winds of external circumstances. Your values act as that essential compass, guiding you steadily towards your true destination. When you align with your values, you sail smoothly and confidently, even through turbulent waters. But when you ignore your compass, you may find yourself lost, feeling uneasy and disoriented.
Understanding what those fundamental values in our lives are helps us bring mental clarity, focus, and tranquility.

Lily Méndez shared the tool “The Value of Values,” a fun game that helps identify, prioritise, and align your personal values and share them in an environment conducive to reflection.
What Are Values?
Values are the things that are important to you at this moment. This scale of values is in constant movement and goes hand in hand with your life experience and personal development.
According to Simon L. Dolan, creator of the tool “The Value of Values” and author of the bestseller “More Coaching by Values,” values are words loaded with meaning. When classified and translated into concrete behaviors, in line with our goals and shared with the people who matter to us, they become powerful tools that guide us towards success in all dimensions of life.
What Are Values For?
1. Set the Course for Your Life: Many people live on autopilot and, over time, realise that they have ended up in a place that does not satisfy them. Knowing your values, you can use this internal compass to stay on the right path.
2. Facilitate Decision-Making: Knowing your values gives you clarity and focus when making important decisions, providing a firm criterion to guide you.
3. Help Achieve Your Goals: When facing difficulties and knowing your personal values, you know exactly what to do to avoid getting blocked or paralyzed. Your values will serve as a guide to advance without many difficulties.
4. Increase Job Satisfaction: When there is harmony between your values and those of the organization you work for, you feel more comfortable. This coherence allows you to stay connected to your company, improving your productivity and reducing stress.
